Bens Creek

This access area for Class I-II Bens Creek is on river-right at the KidSport soccer complex in Ideal Park.

  • Take PA Route 985 and turn right (if traveling 985 north) at the BP station onto Glessner Road. Cross over Bens Creek and the soccer field will be on your right.
  • From the bottom of the Johnstown Inclined Plane in downtown Johnstown, take PA Route 403 south approximately 4.5 miles to 985 South. Take 985 South approximately 0.25 miles and turn left at the BP station onto Glessner Road. Cross over Bens Creek and the soccer field will be on your right.

Stonycreek River at Riverside (River Mile 6.1)

This access area for the Class I Stonycreek Bottom Section is on the Jim Mayer Riverswalk trail.

  • From the bottom of the Johnstown Inclined Plane in downtown Johnstown, take PA Route 403 south approximately 4 miles and turn left onto Eisenhower Blvd at the traffic light, crossing the Stonycreek River. Just after the bridge, turn left onto Michigan Avenue to the end. There’s limited parking under the rail bridge.

Stonycreek River at Greenhouse Park (River Mile 7.5)

Latitude: 40.2766 Longitude: -78.9233

This access area is at Stonycreek Whitewater Park and serves as the start of the Kiski-Conemaugh River Water Trail. It also serves as the take-out for the Class II-III Lower Section of the Stonycreek River.

  • From the bottom of the Johnstown Inclined Plane in downtown Johnstown, take PA Route 403 south approximately 5.5 miles. Greenhouse Park will be on your left.

Stonycreek River at Carpenter’s Park (River Mile 11.2)

This access at the confluence of the Stonycreek River and Paint Creek serves as the takeout for the Stonycreek River Class III-IV Canyon Section, the put-in for the Stonycreek River Class II-III Lower Section, and the takeout for the Class V Paint Creek. It’s river-right on the Stonycreek River just upstream from the mouth of Paint Creek.

  • From downtown Windber, take Graham Avenue heading northwest (intersecting streets will be heading down in number: 11th St., 10th St., etc.). Continue straight onto Bedford Street. At the stop sign just after the S-turn rail underpass, turn left onto Main Street. Turn right onto Hoffman Avenue (just after crossing over PA Route 56). Follow this road to the first stop sign. Turn right onto Main Street which becomes Cottage Lane along Paint Creek down to the access on your right (just before the bridge over the Stonycreek River).

Paint Creek at Scalp Level

Latitude: 40.2439 Longitude: -78.8476

This access is river-right on Paint Creek behind the Scalp Level Volunteer Fire Company and serves as the put-in for the Class V Paint Creek. It is just below Sandy Falls on Paint Creek.

  • From downtown Windber, take Graham Avenue heading northwest (intersecting streets will be heading down in number: 11th St., 10th St., etc.). Continue straight onto Bedford Street. At the stop sign just after the S-turn rail underpass, turn left onto Main Street. The Scalp Level Volunteer Fire Company will be on your right. Park near the ramp down to Paint Creek (behind the fire company). You may have to get out of your vehicle and look for the ramp. It is not very apparent. Do not attempt to drive down the ramp.

Stonycreek River at Foustwell (River Mile 15.3)

This access on river-left serves as the downstream put-in for the Stonycreek River Class III-IV Canyon Section.

  • From downtown Windber, take Graham Avenue heading northwest (intersecting streets will be heading down in number: 11th St., 10th St., etc.). Continue straight onto Bedford Street. At the stop sign just after the S-turn rail underpass, turn left onto Main Street. Continue straight onto PA Route 601 South 4.5 miles (crossing Shade Creek at mile 4.1), cross the Stonycreek River and park on the right near the rail tracks. You can put in here or walk 300 yards upstream on a dirt road along the river to put in above the Class IV Showers rapid.

Stonycreek River at Hollsopple Ball Field (River Mile 17)

This access on river-left serves as a put-in for the Class III-IV Stonycreek Canyon Section or a take-out for the Class I-II Middle Stonycreek Section.

  • From US Route 219, take the PA Route 403 / Davidsville exit to PA Route 403 South. Turn left onto PA Route 601 North at the Wooden Indian Tavern in Hollsopple. Proceed 0.15 miles and turn right onto Sagewood Street (look for small sign for the ball field). Take the dirt road past the ball field. The Conemaugh Township access is just downstream from the ball field.

Stonycreek River at Benson (River Mile 17.2)

This access on river-right serves as a put-in for the Class III-IV Stonycreek Canyon Section or a take-out for the Class I-II Middle Stonycreek Section.

  • From US Route 219, take the PA Route 403 / Davidsville exit to PA Route 403 South. Turn right onto Main Street just after crossing the Stonycreek River into Benson. Turn right onto Church Street and continue to the river. Please be respectful to fishers.

Stonycreek River at Blough (River Mile 21)

This access on river-left serves as a put-in or takeout for the Class I-II Middle Stonycreek Section.

  • From US Route 219, take the PA Route 403 / Davidsville exit to PA Route 403 South. Proceed approximately 4 miles to Blough. Turn right onto Koontz Road just before the bridge over the Stonycreek River. The access area with limited parking is on the left. Please be respectful of private property.

Stonycreek River at Hooversville (River Mile 24.5)

This access on river-right serves as a put-in or takeout for the Class I-II Middle Stonycreek section.

  • From US Route 219, take the PA Route 403 / Davidsville exit to PA Route 403 South. Proceed approximately 6 miles and turn right onto South Street in Hooversville. Turn left onto Clark Street. Access is on your right. Parking is limited. Please be respectful of private property.
